Request for update to Kinnect Production issue

#1

This is a request for an update - if there is one - regarding other posts on this topic.

With Microsoft’s decision to no longer produce their Kinnect system, what should new MOCAP artists use to capture their data? The goal would be to record the movement of human actors and then import into Blender using ni mate. That data would then tie to a rig for animation as normal.

Again, I know this topic has been advanced in other posts, but that was a few months ago. Has there been any change to ni mate’s response to the issue? Will ni mate continue to support the Kinnect system with its own upgrades? Will ni mate develop its own sensor with Raspberry Pi or other tech?

Thanks

Will ni mate continue to support the Kinnect system with its own upgrades?

The Kinect1 and Kinect2 sensors, as well as Primesense Carmine 1.08 and Asus XTion Pro Live can all be used for mocap with NI mate, and all those sensors are at the end of their life cycle. That is, nothing for those sensors in regards to firmware or software updates should change, and as such they should work with NI mate (except for the Kinect 1 model 1473 on Mac).

Will ni mate develop its own sensor with Raspberry Pi or other tech?

We have no plans to develop our own hardware as we lack the finances to begin such an endeavour. This would have a very high cost and take considerable developer resources, and we’re largely a software company.
